Just some totally random stuff posted on my Instagram these past few weeks. I don’t really have a social life at the moment and I’ve gotten tired of taking photos of everything like where I am and what I’m about to eat, hence the lack of my usual monthly diary (bah who needs that!), so all I’ve got are drawings. :) I was on television 2 weeks ago and I’m sort of too embarrassed to share it because I think I’ve been awkward in some parts, trying to explain what I do. I’ve also been getting into other mediums at a very slow pace, and I concluded my watercolor workshops for this year. The 2nd to the last image was a demo work I did for my workshops. The one on the Left was done last May and the one on the Right was just a few days ago. I never quite expected that the result would have a huge jump. I probably unlocked a couple of things while constantly relaying certain processes to my students. I’ve been enjoying teaching a lot and I’m really happy that my attendees are responding very positively to it. It feels overwhelming to see how much they progress all throughout the course. I was really touched when one of my attendees said that she doesn’t get frustrated anymore when she paints, and another said that her works had a HUGE jump from the 1st to the last session. I feel very pressured whenever I feel that someone in class is getting left behind. I’m glad to see that my worries are paying off. There you go, my life right now. :)

Another one for a show this September at Kapitana Gallery, Bacolod. This is a really small piece, around 5x8 inches, which I’m still working on. I’m still thinking of making another one similar to this.

Just a small painted postcard for a show. I’m thinking of making another one. I hope they accept it! *fingers crossed*

Did this early this year. Keep forgetting to post my works. :)

I’m opening 1 workshop again, the Watercolor Intensive for Beginners (4-hr Crash Course) this July 5! I’ve decided to overhaul the entire workshop and focus on painting for almost the entire duration of the session. It’s gonna be fun and really different from before. If anyone wants to join, just email me at chua.valerie@gmail.com to get all the deatils and application. :)
(PS. Also doing a workshop in Cebu this June with other artists. Will keep you guys posted about this!)

My work for Playing Arts. I posted previews of this before but I never got to upload the final piece. Playing Arts is a poker card set produced by Digital Abstracts. Each card is uniquely illustrated by an artist. It’s an honor to be part of it! There are so many amazing artists in the lineup that the experience felt elusive. My card is the 5 of Clubs. The printing and material is top notch — it’s waterproof, I think! You can visit the website to check out all the artists and to purchase a set. They ship worldwide!

Some wip for Light Grey Art Lab's Animystics show.

I think the funnest part is the creation of our spirit animal. We’re tasked to provide a backstory and a history of our animal. I chose a wolf although I did a little twist and added a fictitious folklore backstory to it. I’ll talk about it when the proper time comes. For the meantime, wips behold!

It’s springtime! Been getting Snapchats from friends in NY that the weather there is great and they’re not wearing tons of layers anymore. Ahhh so jealous! My only experience of spring was in Japan 4 years ago. It’s a magical season. I’m in a tropical country where it’s summer 365 days a year. When we were growing up, our textbooks say “we have 2 seasons: wet and dry” Lol! Is this overcompensation or ‘fo realz?

It’s officially summer here. Classes are ending (our summer vacation is from late March to early June) which means, workshops start soon! I’m excited and nervous and I guess a little lonely cause I’m holding classes in a vacant location (the studio I used before had people residing in it. This one is completely deserted). /Hinting for friends to visit

Here’s something I worked on a few days ago. This piece is more of a learning process for me. Each section is trial and error and I had to redraw and repaint on some parts a couple of times while I was progressing—so many awkward parts and they still look awkward. Haha… I painted on a semi hot press paper so some things that I normally do on cold press can’t be done properly here but that’s okay. A little challenge is good! Not sure if it’s done or if I already overdid some parts to its disadvantage but I want to move on to the next.

Hello everyone! If you could recall from one of my previous posts, Crested Tees and I partnered up and they’re finally releasing the designs one by one!
